About Midwives of Kansas City

Midwives of Kansas City is a homebirth practice. We have 4 providers: Suzanne Ryan located in Leavenworth, KS; Sarah Wallbaum in Prairie Village, KS; Lisa Matthes in Lee's Summit, MO; and Shari Stone-Ulrich in St Joseph MO

Suzanne Ryan

Suzanne is a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) and received her Master of Science in Nursing at Case Western Reserve University and residency training at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Since arriving to the Kansas City area in 2000, she has had the blessed opportunity and honor to assist over 500 births at home, birth centers, or hospitals. Suzanne believes pregnancy is a normal occurrence of life and not a medical illness.

Sarah Wallbaum

Sarah began her work in the birthing world as a certified birth doula through DONA and was trained as a childbirth educator.  She is currently a midwifery student working on her Certified Professional Midwife’s certification.  She has studied natural nutrition and healing for many years and uses this knowledge to assist the moms she works with to encourage a healthier pregnancy and more satisfying birth.  She feels that birth is a pivotal time in which a woman can explore her inner strengths as well as her fears, opening herself to feel empowered to make decisions for herself as well as for her child.

Shari Stone-Ulrich

Shari graduated from Mizzou Nursing in 1985 as an RN and joined the US Air Force, working in labor, postpartum and nursery.  The USAF sent her to Georgetown University for her MSN and to be a Certified Nurse-Midwife in 1993.  While practicing in USAF hospitals, she caught over 1,000 babies.  She retired in 2007 and moved back to NW MO to be near her family.  Natural childbirth has always been her passion, if that is what the birthing mother wants. She believes strongly in birth being a normal event for the vast majority of women.  She prefers to only use interventions if absolutely necessary, so it is a dream fulfilled to provide home birth services in Northwest Missouri.  Shari and her partners look forward to making your next birth your best birth!

Lisa Matthes

Lisa is a Certified Nurse Midwife. Prior to becoming a CNM, she practiced as a Registered Nurse for 12 years, working in ICU, ER, and Telemetry. She received her undergraduate degree from CMSU (now UCM) in Warrensburg, MO. Her MSN in midwifery was earned from the State University of New York, at Stony Brook in 2008. Upon graduation from her midwifery program, she worked briefly in the hospital setting, but her heart has always been with homebirth, where normal non-interventional birth can be a reality and not simply lip-service. Lisa's favorite part of birth is the first hour of the new person's life, when she can watch the new family fall in love with each other!
